The Truth About Banquet Coordination

Coordination problem,banquet coordinator,banquet coordinator's truth

It might seem like a fun and glamorous position when you attend your friend's wedding and you see the banquet manager escorting the bride & groom into the room, directing his waiters in serving the food, and later even taking center stage during the cake cutting ceremony. You might even think, hey, I would like to do that for a living. Below, I have outlined what it takes to become a good banquet coordinator.

A banquet coordinator’s job is organizing the smooth presentation of staff, food and facilities for events held in a banquet-type atmosphere. To be a banquet manager or coordinator, you are required to have a bachelor's degree in a business field, in combination with a proven work history. Banquet coordinators often work long hours that include evenings, weekends and holidays. Most of the heavy lifting is done by assisting staff.

As described above, the requirements for a career as a banquet coordinator range between relevant work experience and formal education. It is very important that banquet managers have a firm understanding of the financial and organizational aspects of managing a banquet facility. Leadership qualities are also very important because the coordinator will have staff under him whom he must manage. As a coordinator, you should have strong knowledge of service standards and different service types and you would have an edge over your competitors if you speak multiple languages.

Most hotels and other such establishments have banquet rooms for hire. The banquet coordinator is, as the name implies, tasked with the duty of doing all the coordination of the events that take place in such venues. He must therefore have exceptional organizational and communication skills.

The duties and responsibilities of a banquet coordinator include the establishment of, and the smooth, efficient, ongoing service in all banquet and meeting functions. He is also responsible for the continuous upgrade and upkeep of all buffet presentations and making a budget of the banquet expenses in detail for the client.

The banquet coordinator also has the duty of planning, coordinating and supervising all catered events at the venue. As a coordinator, you will be responsible for all the hiring and firing and scheduling and training the catering staff. Also, you will be responsible for the human resource development of the existing catering staff in service techniques, menu presentations, policies and procedures among other things.
